OpenAI releases GPT-5.5, bringing company one step closer to an AI ‘superapp’ - TechCrunch

Punto clave del dia: OpenAI releases GPT-5.5, bringing company one step closer to an AI ‘superapp’ - TechCrunch According to OpenAI, GPT-5.5 is designed to be useful across a broad array of categories, including foundational enterprise areas like agentic coding and knowledge work, but also in more experimental AI applications like mathematics and scientific research. The company also released data Thursday showing the model’s superior performance across a range of benchmarks.

Compared to its previous models, and to models from competitors Google and Anthropic (like Gemini 3.1 Pro and Claude Opus 4.5), 5.5 consistently scores higher, according to OpenAI. [...] OpenAI released its last model only last month, with a previous release in December and, before that, November. The company has continued to churn out new models at a crisp pace, a trend that company staff said should be expected to continue for the foreseeable future.

“We see pretty significant improvements in the short term, extremely significant improvements in the medium term,” said Jakub Pachocki, OpenAI’s chief scientist. “In fact, I would say, like, I think the last two years have been surprisingly slow.” [...] “This model is a real step forward towards the kind of computing that we expect in the future — but it is one step, and we expect to see many in the future,” Brockman said.

But the U.S.-China gap in performance of top AI models has "effectively closed," according to a recent report from Stanford University's Institute for Human-Centered AI. China's embassy in Washington said it opposed "the unjustified suppression of Chinese companies by the U.S." "China has always been committed to promoting scientific and technological progress through cooperation and healthy competition. China attaches great importance to the protection of intellectual property rights," said Liu Pengyu, the embassy spokesperson. [...] In a Thursday memo, Michael Kratsios, the president's chief science and technology adviser, accused foreign entities "principally based in China" of engaging in deliberate, industrial-scale campaigns to "distill," or extract capabilities from, leading AI systems made in the U.S.

The administration, Kratsios wrote, will work with American AI companies to identify such activities, build defenses and find ways to punish offenders. [...] Last year, the Chinese start-up DeepSeek rattled U.S. markets when it released a large language model that could compete with U.S.
